Of interest to horse owners in QLD Caboolture News Article - Thurs 18/09/14 A last minute backdown over a Hendra virus safeguard has saved Cabooltures State Equestrian Centre ( QSEC) from possibly losing several major events during the next six months. An EA by law due to come into effect in October meant every horse had to be vaccinated for an event at QSEC of more than 20 horses and any event horses stayed overnight. QSEC has hosted more than 200 regional, state, national and international events since opening in 2011. The move allows 12 events planned in the next six months to go ahead. However the popular QLD Dressage State Championships had already been postponed. Explaining its backdown EA chairman Peter Toft said the proposal was too premature and said it would take more than the proposed time of six months for appropriate risk assessments. He said there was still conjecture among horse owners over potential reactions to the Hendra vaccine. Mr Toft said the policy was not a reflection on QSEC, which he said strictly enforced Biosecurity Queensland guidelines. Some sanity prevails ……This concern, at our events, over horse to horse transmission should be put into perspective of actual risk...This is from the AAHL (Australian Animal Health Laboratory) for QLD DAFF. Initial work at AAHL, which was partially funded by the department, showed that horses could be experimentally infected with Hendra virus by the nasal/oral route, and could excrete Hendra virus in the urine and saliva. These studies also showed that, on one occasion, an Hendra virus-infected cat likely transmitted infection to a horse in close contact. However, experimental transmission from horse to horse, or from horse to cat, could not be demonstrated. Experimentally infected flying foxes did not develop clinical disease (though some developed antibodies), and transmission from these bats to horses could not be demonstrated.
