Of the dozens (hundreds?) of arias in the Bach cantatas with a prominent flute part, this one strikes me as among the oddest. Was Gott tut, ist wohlgetan. What God does, he does well. However, the frenetic competition for Deitys attention between the soprano and the breathless flute, with the cello just trying to bear along uncomplainingly with the arguing pair like a cab driver having to brave a stormy fight between a brawling pair of lovers seated in the back, seems to belie the theological sooth they are rushing against each other to convey.
