Of what standard is our judiciary system in Nigeria? A piece from Jibunor George Chuks. When I was a child, I was made to understand how important the judiciary arm is. That judiciary in a country protects the good interests of the very people that she abides. But to my growing from then to now, opposite is the case, our judiciary protects the bad interests of the people who made the Laws. They say “no one is above the law.” Hmmm, not in this country that this applies. Who says this applies in Nigeria is a hypocrite. I am not saying this because i am looking for comments to post on News24, no, this bothers me so much that is why i want people to share with me this pains and the facts which our judicial system in Nigeria covers up instead of exposing it to the sunlight. There is so much darkness in our judicial system in Nigeria. My little niece with her friends was asked when they grows up what will they like to become, these kids went on and on mentioning doctors, engineers, mass communications, nurse and so on. To my greatest surprise none of these kids mentioned that they will like to become lawyers when they grow up, I was shocked, so I took the liberty you know, and Iasked one of them! Why dint you wish to be a lawyer when you grow up? She answered, I dont want to be a liar when I grow up. Then reluctantly i asked, what do you mean by that,by the way where did you get that impression from kid? She said I have watched politicians steal money, at the end i still see them on the TV and newspapers throwing parties, why are the lawyers not locking them up? I was out of words to reply to this, so I cornered the whole discussion. Judiciary is meant to fight corruption and injustice and not answerable to anybody in power in terms of rendering good justice, because no one is above the law, but in nigeria, rich men and women with dubious ways buys the justice with their filthy money. Why do we set up EFCC and ICPC when the crime suspects ends up not been prosecuted by the judiciary. Other countries, we hear ex leaders been charged and sent to prisons but why is our own country different from this, yet we say we have people that protects the law. Government officials steals billions of naira and dollars yet they will be given an option of fine (money) to pay, and this will make them to escape prison! What lesson did they learn from the crime act they perpetrated? nothing. Because it even give them the impetus to commit more fraudulent crimes, because the higher money you steals the lower your sentence, smaller your crime the higher your sentence. Criminals are celebrated after they have been discharged and acquitted because they bought their way out. Where are the lives of people of ALUU community that brutally killed university students? Where is former House of Rep that committed fraudulent act, former president, cabals of our oil theft, officials of banks that drained the banks they work in, let me stop here but i hope i did refreshed our minds on this cases that nothing was done. Corruption will never stop in a country where their judicial system is not functioning well. People are not afraid to steal private and public money because they can buy their ways out. But if is working well, people will be afraid to corner public and private money. Nigeria judicial system only works on poor masses with no say. Lets tell our self the truth if we must save this country, no one is suppose to be above the laws. The standard of our judicial systems need to be changed for better prosecution of people involve in the crimes. God bless our country.
