Ofcom to Vodafone: forget 4G; get your 3G sorted HOME > OFCOM TO VODAFONE: FORGET 4... Mobile News Vodafone +Lewis Curdie 3 hours ago More articles by Lewis Curdie It’s been joked around the site a few times that some networks would be better sorting out their 3G services before turning their attentions to 4G. Amusingly, that’s pretty much what regulator Ofcom is saying to “Big Red” Vodafone, which has the dubious honour of being the only UK network to fall short on its 3G obligations. Specifically, Vodafone’s 2,100MHz 3G should extend to 90% of the UK’s population, but it falls short by an admittedly tiny 1.4%. Doing a rough calculation thingy, 90% of 63.7 million is 57.3 million, so I guess Vodafone’s 3G covers 56.4 million. Somewhere in that ballpark, anyway. In its 3G Coverage Obligation Verification Results report, the regulator writes: “Following discussions with Ofcom, Vodafone has put in place a plan to bring itself into compliance with the 3G coverage obligation by the end of 2013. “Ofcom is satisfied that Vodafone’s plan is credible. We have therefore decided not to take enforcement action now and will instead assess Vodafone’s compliance in January 2014. We will decide whether to take any further action at that time.” So it’s into the naughty corner for Vodafone (no smack for now though), while O2, Three and EE get a gold star.
