Off The Field With The Blue Knights 7/31/14 Allentown, Pennsylvania Allentown Historically, this is what’s called the “final stretch” in the Drum Corps world, and this year is no different. This is the part of tour where it all starts to get real, where it all starts to hit you, and where people start filling in or drawing their own BK dots. For each of the last ten days, people draw on of the Blue Knight’s dots logo dots each day as a sort of count down until the end of the season. It’s strange to think that this is my last time drawing the BK dots. I remember specifically, at this housing site, my rookie year drawing the dots underneath Angleo’s podium while collecting four leaf clovers through the day. I remember last year where Kenton Wallis, Aaron Bradford, and myself filled in each others dots on our chests (although Kent already had the dots tattooed there, so he just crossed out a dot each day). And this year, I draw mine on my hand as I wake up in the morning to remind myself of the little time we have left and to simply leave nothing behind this year because after 8 more days, this is it for me and every other age out in this corps. The rehearsal day today was incredibly more productive than our last rehearsal day and we were able to pour a great deal more emotion into the run. Even though I shouldn’t, I judge the entire days work off of the run through and we, in my opinion, had a phenomenal run through tonight. The corps rehearsed the tail end of the closer full out about four times and each time, they gave it a little bit more heart, a little bit more meaning, and a little bit more of themselves to communicate the final moment in “That One Second.” GAH! It was amazing! I know that when I look back on the summer, this will be one of the nights that I remember. Tomorrow is our regional in Allentown and it is another make-it-or-break-it sort of vibe we have for placing even higher as there is one more corps that the Blue Knights could reasonably beat this season. I know that if we continue to clean and continue to really strive for perfection (an impossible task, but where excellence is achieved), we could really make Blue Knights history. I know it’s a bit forward to think, but everything we do now sets us up for next year and after that, there’s a track for the Blue Knights to follow. That’s why this year is so important as it determines the next wave of Blue Knights excellence and a new place for the corps in DCI. If you have the chance, visit dci.org and you will see a little blurb about the Blue Knights and a link to a great story put together by Dan Potter of DCI. He interviews Mark Arnold, Brad Toth, and myself regarding this year’s production and Dan put it all together very well. Now off to rehearse for the regional!
