Office of the Leader of Opposition Parliament House Republic of Fiji STATEMENT [37/12/2014] GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO GET ITS ACT TOGETHER ON PROVISION OF DRINKING WATER TO DRY AREAS It’s a dry Christmas for many areas in the West, especially in the Yasawas. Opposition MP and Shadow Minister for Infrastructure Aseri Radrodro calls on the Government and the line ministry to urgently implement contingency plans to ensure delivery of drinking water to affected communities. “Clean and safe water is a basic necessity and a constitutional right for every person as stated in the 2013 constitution. The water shortages make a mockery of the constitutional rights to water. What is the point of providing for such rights if the Government is unable to meet its obligations?” He urges his counterpart, the Minister for Infrastructure Honorable Pio Tikoduadua, to lead the way in bringing relief. Relatives and friends of those living in the Yasawas, particularly in Nalouwaki and Nacula villages, report that officials from the Water Authority of Fiji had visited them recently with water tanks. But drinking water is still not provided. Honorable Radrodro reminds government that water supplies often dry up at this time of the year. There should, therefore, be strategies in place to deal with this. “The government needs to act urgently to correct the situation which is unacceptable and demeaning,” Honorable Radrodro said.
