Ofgem, which regulates gas and energy suppliers, directed all domestic energy suppliers to stop back-billing customers for energy used more than 12 months ago, if the supplier was at fault for not having sent a correct bill to the customer. Last month it was revealed thousands of households around Britain were being billed incorrectly, thanks to errors on the national databases that energy providers use to access meter information. Industry sources said there was a high degree of error in the data, which lists addresses and corresponding meter numbers. This means suppliers use the wrong meter number or address for some of their customers. Even though providers are aware of the problem, some are reluctant to investigate bills that seem suspiciously high and in some cases continue to bill customers for past usage following internal errors.
