Often times people hear about huge jury verdicts and assume that the amount the jury awards is always the amount received by the person suing. That is not correct. After a trial is over, the judge can reduce the amount to make it reasonable. That is what happened in this case. 9 billion in punitive damages was clearly too much and the trial judge appropriately reduced the award. The fact that judges can, and often do, reduce jury verdicts is a safe guard that is in place to make sure that all sides - both the plaintiff and the defendant get equal and fair justice. reuters/article/2014/10/27/us-takeda-pharma-actos-ruling-idUSKBN0IG26N20141027
