Oftentimes, things do not go according to human plan. For instance, Thomas Jefferson Bowen, the first American Baptist missionary to Nigeria, was not inclined to be a priest. At the age of 22, in 1836, he enlisted in the war of Texas against Mexico; he rose to the rank of Captain and continued as an officer until the fall of 1837. With this, his aim was to take up a career in law or politics. While Bowen was proposing, God as it were, was disposing. God had destined him for service in His vineyard. David wanted to build a temple for God; God said no, Solomon, his son, would build it instead. Joseph wanted to stay at home; he ended up a slave before rising to be Prime Minister in Egypt. Jonah wanted to go anywhere except Nineveh, and ended up there anyway (Jonah 1-4). The next time your plans are hindered, remember that God may have other plans which are always far better than yours.
