Oftentimes when tragedy hits, we can’t help but question why God allows bad things to happen to us. It’s so easy to focus on the negative, to doubt His presence in our lives, to forget that there is always a bigger picture. But adversity also brings out the best in us, if we let it. When we choose to find the silver lining behind the cloud, we allow God to reveal to us the supremacy of His wisdom. We gain new insight as well as a deeper knowledge of His character. Our faith is strengthened. We emerge from the experience with lessons we will benefit from for the rest of our lives. Paul indicates that it is spiritual wisdom that should take the place of pride in our desire to be formed in the ways of God. One aspect of spiritual wisdom is humility. This becomes important as we gain more wisdom, as we will be tempted to fall into pride at the knowledge we have gained. Let us take seriously the call to be humble so that we will be protected from such temptations. Jesus calls His disciples to share in His ministry. He continues to call men and women to proclaim the Gospel with Him. It is up to us to respond to His call. We can refuse to become His disciple if that is what we want; we can choose to follow Him if that is our desire. It is important to know that we are responsible for all the choices we make in life. They are what create our character.
