Ogallala was named after the Sioux Indians. The tribe hunted in this area yearly. The tribe was spelled Oglala. It was misspelled by the railroad and post office many times. Some spelled it Ogalalla. It was also spelled Ogallalah. According to one person who lived at the turn of the century, teachers allowed pupils to spell it either way. When Nellie and JS Kroh began operating The Keith County News in the late 1900s, they spelled it Ogallala. Therefore it began to stick along with the Post Office. Hence our current spelling today.
