Ogun Varsity Students Turn To Government Opposition Tools By Wale Adeosun On Tuesday, Senator Ibikunle Amosun approved an across the board reduction of school fees in all state-owned tertiary institutions which is to take effect from the 2014/2015 academic session, some students are to pay 61 percent less than they are currently paying, while some others will be paying as low as N29,700. The reduction in school fees was not accommodated in the state 2014 budget and most of the state-owned tertiary institutions are in their second semester. There is need for supplementary budget to accommodate the reduction. Some of the state-owned tertiary institutions will commence new academic session by next month, September, which means that students will start benefiting from the reduction as from next month. It is worthy to note that Ogun State Government under the leadership of Senator Ibikunle Amosun has cleared the backlog of N1billion CONTISS and Monetization allowances of OOU staff inherited from the previous administration, offset the three-month salaries owed staff of the same institution by the former government, cleared payment of unremitted cooperative, union dues, pension deductions and bank loans of the staff of state-owned tertiary institutions that were owed by Daniel administration, re-absorbed close to 1000 OOU staff that were unjustly sacked by Daniel administration in 2009, convocation for 8 years set in OOU and increase students bursary from paltry #1500 to #5000 and #10000. Under the leadership of Senator Ibikunle Amosun, education has always got more than 20% of the yearly budget. Surprisingly, about 80% of that is used to pay wages and salaries of workers. As at the time of last NUC accreditation, Olabisi Onabanjo University had 100 per cent accreditation for 56 programmes, while 11 programmes have interim accreditation. Impressed by the modest quality assurance exhibited by the university, NUC increased the institution’s admission quota from 4,000 to 6,000 for the 2012/2013 admission exercise. The Daniel administration increased the tuition fees of the state-owned tertiary institution by 100%. Senator Ibikunle Amosun promised to reduce it by 50% once voted into office. On the eve of his exit from power, the former governor announced a reduction of 50%. Notwithstanding that, the Amosun government further reduced the fees by 10%, thus bringing the reduction to 60% before announcement of further reduction by state government on Tuesday. It is only in this part of the world where students, the future leaders of tomorrow are used as political tools to scuttle government policies and developmental programmes. The protest by some used students yesterday was totally uncalled for. It was really saddened to see some future leaders among hired thugs to protest reduction in school fees yesterday. Parents and guardians should monitor there children so that they wont be used by desperate politicians as we approach 2015 general election.
