OgunPolice Arrest Physically Challenged, 3 Others for Defrauding Couple in N14.5M Cleric-Scam ByAfricanOutlookReporter OgunState Police Command has effected arrest of a physically challenged suspect alongside three members of syndicate for allegedly duping a couple of N14.5m. The suspects The State Commissioner of Police,IkemefunaOkoyehad on Monday led his men to carry out arrest of the suspects at their shrine located atOmusorinvillage, inObafemi/Owodelocal government area of the state. AfricanOutlookonlinefurther report that, the identities of the arrested suspects includeWasiuAjani, (physically challenged)ShehuSalam, MrsRisikatOriyomi, and MrsSolaBabalola. Our correspondent also reliably learnt that, the ring leader of the syndicate identified as, BabaAwotola, took to his heels when the men of the Special Anti-robbery Squad closed in on them at their hideout. Further investigations also revealed that, the physically challenged suspect, a native ofIlorin,KwaraState, claimed to be an Islamic cleric, and got the couple into the net of the syndicate. The Police Commissioner,while speaking on the development, confirmed that the saidAjaniwas used to lure the couple, who are rice merchants, into the syndicates net,adding that he was said to have used the name of a late popular Islamic cleric, AlfaBulala, to hoodwink the victims. The police boss also explained thatAjanion the fateful day dressed in Islamic cassock and hung about nine different rosaries on his neck, accosted the couple aroundOwodeOnirin, Lagos, and gave them a revelation of a problem before them which needed to be warded off through special prayers. His words, The suspect also told them to buy a measure of salt and give it as alms to three beggars. He later told husband to buy a local egg, and used it to pray, circling it around his head three times Okoyewhile further exposing the antics of thefraudsters, added that,Ajanilater used the egg as a bait to lure the couple to their den, where they began to swindle them. He got the wifes telephone number, and through it, he called the couple to bring the egg to their den for a special prayer, the commissioner stated. He said the syndicate under the pretext of warding off the evil before them collected N14.5m in three installments from them, stating that the syndicate used the two women,RisiqatandSolaas white witches who claimed to offer prayers to ward off evils . The witches who claimed to have descended from heaven reportedly said they needed money to fly back to heaven,Okoyesaid. However, while speaking with journalists, the physically challenged suspect said he got the information about the couple from the fleeing BabaAwotola. It was BabaAwotolawho introduced me to this shady business. He asked me whether I want to die a wretched man. He was the one who gave the information that the couple had a problem and that they are a bit comfortable. He promised me a car and a sum ofN300,000, but he only gave me andShehuN100,000 each, he confessed to newsmen. Meanwhile,the Commissioner of Police has warned residents to be wary offraudsterswho parade themselves as clerics and also urged the people to report any shady activities they noticed in their communities to the police. He said the suspects had confessed that they were involved in the scam.
