Oh, Captain, My Captain! Dead Poets Society has been one of my favorite movies since i first saw it in the theater. And this scene has always been one of the most meaningful to me. We only get one go-around in life. Life presents each of us with challenges. It is up to us to get lost in the drift, or to stand up, take on our challenges, and live an extraordinary life. That doesnt necessarily mean being in the public eye. It means different things to each one of us. For me, I try to live my dreams in whatever measure I can. Ive marched for civil rights in Washington, D.C.; New York City; Boston; Berlin and more. Ive been fortunate to be able to perform with chorus before countless people, at Symphony Hall and Carnegie Hall amongst other places. Ive helped get programs in place to protect GLBT children. And I make my leaving helping people find out about their family and the role each of our families played in history, be it personal, local, or greater. We often dismiss words such as Carpe Diem by considering them to be trite. Or we think that an extraordinary life is only for the rich and famous, or for people other than ourselves. This is not true. We can all define what an extraordinary life is for ourselves. And it is up to each of us to live that life. Dont settle. And dont let people put you down for trying. When they do, simply say Thank you for sharing. Then move on and do what you like. Because one day you will look back on your life. And it is my experience that we have far more regrets about the things that we didnt do than we have about the things we did do in life. Robin Williams inspired many with his life. I am pretty satisfied with inspiring myself. And hopefully motivating the people I care about to seize the day. Live an extraordinary life, no matter what that means to you. Thank you, Mr. Williams, for your passion and your courage.
