John Severson described what happened next in the Surfer Magazine with Murphy on the cover some years later. He began surfing in 1959 when he was rescued from the horrible clutches of ho-daddyism and greasy hair by his good friend Randy Nauert. Rick would use expressions back then like Hey Esé... Vato! Mexican gang language. Rick had self tattooed CXS with a cross and glow marks on his hand between his thumb and index finger. The expression con safos (CXS) is meant to guard an inscription from defacement by threatening evil to anyone who might deface the graffito or art of the maker. The literal translation of con safos is the same to you. It was right there on his creative hand where he held his pen, or pencil. We established the Nauert Griffin Card Company to protect his work and to publish it. Notice the Haggertys Surf Club shirt. We changed the name from the owner of the house on the bluffs in Palos Verdes, with the most challenging surf, by altering the spelling from J. J. Haggarty to Haggerty to protect it.
