Oh…. Poor BIG Boo Boo. By all indications, he appears to have a torn ACL. He has an appointment at the specialist in Milwaukee tomorrow and surgery scheduled for Wednesday. Boo Boo will have to return to Door County immediately afterwards as not to be moved more than once. As though that’s not even enough of a problem, here is the anticipated worst. Boo Boo will have to reside in foster through his rehabilitation and will be gone from the team for an extended period of time. We do not have a choice on this because even with this severe limp, we just, no matter what, CAN”T seem to keep him down! Wherever we are, he is! Crating seems like an answer but with all the others and the action around him, any mobility is a risk of further injury and even keeping him off the bus has proved to be a serious challenge - the dogs do travel quite a bit as you know. Then, our ability to do what is needed for further physical therapy is very limited due to 1) being in the rural and the team’s ability to reside in the big city (with all its resources) is not a good option for all the rest of them. 2) Right or wrong, we don’t believe that we can do a good job with his recovery while taking care of the needs of everyone else and we are heartbroken. I’m scared because - Boo Boo has never been away from us or his team, ever. Boo Boo is the Alpha. We are seriously concerned about the emotional repercussions for him and the team. Having him gone will result in a shift in the team order (and that always happens when we lose an Alpha…) but returning into it is another thing. It’s not a pretty thought. Also, we are confident that Boo Boo’s foster parent is competent, experienced and caring enough to take this on and we’re very fortunate to have been able to arrange this. It is a lot to “make happen” but for big Boo Boo? He’s so worth it don’t you think? We will be able to visit him daily as long as we too do not leave the county during this time. We will have more information from Milwaukee tomorrow but in the meantime, please keep good good Boo Boo in your thoughts and in your prayers. He’s worked so hard to be such a great community dog and he needs your positive thoughts and prayers at this time. …and lastly, weve never had this kind of medical injury before and we know that it’s quite common but we believe, in this team situation, it takes on a whole new meaning – much more complex than normal. Has anyone ever heard of a recovery/results without surgery? At this time, cost is not our first concern, Boo Boo and his team are. Please keep in mind that Boo Boo is an unusual 105lbs. and while many large dogs have gone through this, Boo boo’s genetics as a rescue are against him. So after all is said and done, we’re asking – please, what do you think? ~xoxo Musher Bonnie and Musher Rick
