Oh! These awful Jams! by Dr. Sabrina Rashid. We were given the hope of solving of the traffic jam problem long time back. But instead what are we getting? More and more unbearable jams. So that the city of Dhaka has become just become unlivable. Why are people made to suffer in this horrible way? Not only suffer but also cause loss of their time, money and energy. And who are responsible for all this? The public who vote for the government or the government which comes to power promising the welfare of the public before they get the votes? Then they add more to their sufferings by political rallies and meetings in the midst of roads and important intersections. If the public is responsible what should they do now to solve the problem? I find no other way but to sit at home and go no where!! Neither to work or shop or visit to socialize or to the doctor or hospital even. That does solve the traffic jam problem as it happens at the time of hartals and blockades! But then the people in power get so up upset and cry themselves hoarse begging the people to come out of their abodes and get the barren streets busy!! But when they listen to their pleas and do come out in “swarms” the streets become choked and everybody is stuck in a gridlock for not an hour only but for hours upon hours. Sweating and sometimes vomiting even, due to inhalation of so much of traffic fumes. Ladies and children are the worst sufferers. These toxic gases can make any healthy and normal person sick. But what about the already sick? A man with chest pain having a heart attack or a woman in labor pain? Or a child with severe diarrhea or abdominal pain? What will happen to them? Who is going to help them reach the hospital in time to save their lives? The public or the government? The public is itself at a standstill in the scorching sun and sickening fumes. And the government is also on a self-imposed standstill as nothing concrete is being done to alleviate the sufferings of the masses. Yes, the fly-overs have been made. But it severed hardly any purpose in this regard. What we need is a mass transport system which all big cities of the world have, including our neighboring country. So why can’t we have it? JICA completed its study and was all ready and asking for the high-up’s permission to start the work 5 yrs back. But permission was not granted for this and that flimsy reason. If they were allowed to start the work five years back it may have been near completion by now. But alas here we are still stuck in the quick-sand of traffic jams and sinking deeper and deeper into it! And there seems to be no hint in sight to help us out of it. If the high-ups do not want JICA to do the job and would rather give it to a company from our neighboring country. Why don’t they just do it and make haste? We have had just enough of this awful suffering and can not take any more of it as the authorities sleep on this serious problem of the unfortunate citizens of this country. Please for Heaven’s sake do something to give us respite and do it fast!
