Oh...What A Nakuru Night! By Elijah Kinyanjui November 17 2013 Take newly reformed secular-cum-gospel musician Linet Munyali popularly known as Size 8, put her with Charles Njagua Kanyi aka Jaguar, add Mtumishi and Mchungaji (Gilbert Baraza and Josephat Mchasia respectively) and place them on the same stage with Nakuru born musicians Franco wa Subu, Sammy Muraya Jr... add on live TV coverage alongside the names of Noni Gathoni and Dera Ipupa and alongside that of MC Martha Ndung’u of K24 and you have yourself a real show. In addition sprinkle in a top Kalenjin musician, add a top Luhya performer David Barasa of Webuye jua Kali band whose one hit is top of the pop in the music charts currently plus as bevy of beauties-the best from every county in Kenya- and you have yourself...an exceptional event. Don’t be mistaken, the vent was not taking place in Kenya’s capital city. It all happened last night in our very own county, Nakuru. The event was at the Rift Valley Sports Club in Nakuru town which attained a climax in the wee hours of this morning when Mt Kenya University’s Education student Elaine Mwangi of Nakuru Town East constituency beat 10 contestants and was crowned the inaugural Miss Tourism Nakuru County. It was all colour, pomp and glamour at the event when some of the brightest Nakuru personalities showcased their talents, alongside some classy dresses that made one quip that it was a “night of short skirts” as well. The evening event held on the greens of the prestigious club got off to a slow start as its official time was pushed from the initial 5pm to sometimes shortly after 7pm but this did not dampen the spirit of those present. Ndung’u, teaming up with our very own MC Mike Gitone and Slim Wa Muthoni-who usually entertains at Garden Villa-pulled up a show that was live on K24 TV remarkably and almost without a hitch. Nakuru County Assembly Speaker Susan Kihika perhaps best encapsulated the evening and impressions of the night when she quipped: “Wow... I am very impressed by the level of this event. It shows how much potential we have in our midst that can be tapped. Do not believe the media hype that Nakuru County is lagging. We are right on top of things led by our Governor Kinuthia Mbugua”, said Kihika. Credit of course goes to the Nakuru County Minister for Tourism, Wildlife Management, Industrialisation and Trade, the youthful Samuel Gitau who cobbled up a superb team that has been working behind the scenes to emerge with such a breath-taking performance. Among those present was Governor Kinuthia who was the chief guest, the County Speakers Forum Chairman Abdi Nuh, Mandera County Assembly Speaker, Nominated Senator Liza Chelule, Nakuru County Women Rep Mary Mbugua, County Secretary Joseph Motari, Nakuru Minister for Environment, Energy and Water Richard Rop, his roads counterpart, Maina Kairo, Nakuru Majority Leader Mwaura Njenga, ,his Minorities counterpart Dan Ambale and MP Samuel Arama (who however left early) of Nakuru Town West, John Kihagi of Naivasha and their Molo colleague Jacob Macharia.
