Oh great. Greg Hunt has dusted off his ‘G4’ fantasy again. Had the Minister been at the Warsaw climate negotiations and experienced the manifold criticisms directed at Australia, he might realize how laughable the idea of us “helping” other countries sounds right now. I doubt very much that he is serious about using the G20 in this way. Rather, that with the hardliners in Cabinet preventing any sensible moves on climate change, he is scratching around for something, anything that might seem like a credible contribution. But I can’t help but wonder what progressive countries feel when they read this. Whether they feel amused or angry. I think the only thing they care about right now when it comes to Australia and climate change is minimizing the harm that the Abbott Government’s recklessness might do to international progress. If we are serious about encouraging other countries to act faster and harder, there really is only one thing we can do. Get our own house in order and start taking real action ourselves. It’s that simple.
