Oh just look at that adorable cat, why on earth is he in the pound? Surely someone can get him out? Pressure heaped upon the already pressure cooked existence of a rescuer. Please save this one, go get that one, you just cant let that one die can you? These are the pleas that are heard right around Australia, the constant stream of messages and comments, tags and shares. The heartbreak of having to say no when you are dying inside whilst your heart really needs you to say yes. The devastation when you realise that no-one else has any room either and that adorable cat (dog, horse, guinea pig; add in your passion) dies through no fault of their own. The cruelty of realising that you indeed cannot do anything to stem the flow of accusations because you yourself are silently saying those very same things to yourself, over and over again. Wishing for extra foster carers, more donations, more adoptions, more everything, just more, please. You want to save every single one, your guilt builds and your heart breaks into a million shards, one for each death. There is no single answer to this, no simple remedy, just a stoic resignation that we do what we can instead of what we want and when a cat finds a forever home we need to rejoice that we helped THAT one, gave THAT one life, a chance and hopefully a lifetime of joy. THAT one.
