Oh my goodness yesterday was a physically and emotionally grueling day! I thought I would give an update for all of you who have been praying for my daughter Kimmy. On Thursday she had an endoscopic ultrasound on her pancreas. To do that they took two scopes down her throat, and the procedure took about an hour and a half. I guess they had trouble getting two tubes down her throat at the same time and she had a bleeding abrasion about the size and shape of a quarter at the visible opening of her throat. The next day her throat was really hurting her to swallow and coughing was very painful. She had a lot of abdominal pain, and she went to the doctor to make sure her throat was okay. The doctor became concerned that perhaps something had been perforated during the procedure the day before. So the doctor ordered chest and abdominal x-rays, and blood tests. The x-rays came back showing air in the abdominal cavity where it shouldn’t be, and her white blood cell count was 23,000. This alarmed the doctor and he said she needed to go immediately for a ct-scan and further tests, because she might need emergency surgery. Kaiser doesn’t have a hospital in the high desert, and wanted her to go to Fontana. She talked them into letting her go to St. Mary’s for the test which is only 10 minutes from the Kaiser clinic versus 50 minutes to Fontana. They did numerous tests. Her white blood count at that point was 26,000. In the normal range they never want to see more than 11,000. We were stuck in the emergency for 10 hours. Since her pain didn’t get any more acute, and her white blood count went down to 20,000 Kaiser opted not to admit her to the hospital, but to follow up with her regular doctor to find out what is causing her white blood count to be so high. I didn’t think about it at the time, but their strong reaction wanting CTscans, ultrasounds, x-rays, and other tests was probably to cover their liability. When we finally got to leave the hospital, between the time at Kaiser and St. Mary’s we had spent almost fourteen hours with doctors. I had been up for 27 hours straight, and I was definitely ready to go home. After all that, the doctor said things such as stress from a lot of pain can cause your white blood count to be elevated and Kimmy has undergone numerous awful tests some without any anesthesia. So duh- do you think that could be it! She does have a cyst on her pancreas and that is why they did the endoscopic ultrasound on Thursday, which they are going to repeat in 6 months. The good news is that they saw no evidence that the cyst is cancerous-praise God! Well that is all the info for now, please keep praying for her. Thanks everyone for your prayers and concern- you are a blessing to our family!
