Oh this is good! Ethan is 13. Most who know us well know we have a constant dialogue going with Ethan about how we view the possibility of a relationship with a girl that could be considered dating, or even courting. Our advice to him: When you have reached a level of maturity that enables you to more clearly pursue someone you are interested in, we are on your side in spending time with them to establish a relationship that could develop into a lifelong commitment. We discourage dating or courting until the responsibility of a relationship is one he can carry in order to protect the young lady from being the love interest of today, and the ex girlfriend of tomorrow. When he is mature enough to grasp how his interactions with other females will impact this girl, he maybe is ready to begin investing of himself in getting to better know this girl. When he has devoted discipline to studying the Word, appreciating his academics, and serving his own family, he may be ready to entertain a relationship. When he Is mature enough to understand the precious beauty that a young lady is, one not to be pursued today and ignored tomorrow, we will consider it. Many say our advice is silly. We would disagree. He isnt in a bubble. He isnt being controlled, he is being advised. And for now, he is responding extremely well to this advice. We will continue to pray, to talk, and to listen. But we will not encourage a relationship prior to seeing him prove worthy of investing in a relationship. Lastly, obsession is bad. A young, Christian couple obsessed with each other is dangerous. And attending church, listening to the Word, spending time being mentored by like-minded believers would be high on our priority list. Finding their own way doing devotions together minus the accountability and direction of consistent community of the body wouldnt be advised. Life is tough. This is tough, and we dont have it all figured out. But I find myself talking about this often with friends and wanted to share.
