Oh well, today was awesome! cool, cloudy, windy and rain. I was complimented on how ofte I ride my horses. The young guy behind the wheel was looking for his too. The girl next to him, said..Must be fun to ride all the time.. ha! so far from the truth. People dont realize you just dont just hop a on a horse and say..Gitty up! no sir! They are letting a predator hop on their back, the most vulnerable part of a horse and let you have your way with them..nope! maybe in Hollyweird where theyre broken, selected, tamed and trained for years. Nope! you have to be friends, earn their trust and most of all respect! A horse is an incredible animal, they can run 25-30 miles an hour, can gallop at 3/4 speed for miles, have very keen eyes, sensitive noses (they can smell water. Ive witnessed this before), can see in complete darkness, excellent sense of direction and go days without water, if need be. The care of your horse and equipment is vital: watering, feeding, grooming and fixing riding equipment damaged while on the trail is important (seen too many riders injured when their bridal snapped, stirrups pop off). Keeping your riding gear in good repair is a sign of experience. After getting to know your mount, and earning their trust, saddling up and riding is next, but its tough! your horse reacts to everything new and gets spooked like anyone else, so be prepared to get: tossed, stepped on, head butted, kicked, bit and fell on. So the next time you see a rider on horseback, remember the patience and training it took to make it all look so easy..
