Oh, yall. I had the flu. You know the kind where you become a caricature of your real self? Walking from room to room in your worst pjs carrying around a box of Kleenex. Days of unmade beds and flatten pillows on the sofa. Moving your body from one horizontal surface to another. Red Jello. Orange Jello. And lots of saltines. Hot tea ten times a day. The stuff you never care about until you have the flu. You dream weird stuff if you sleep at all. And all you want is sleep. But you cant sleep because the the roots on your scalp seem to be screaming. And your teeth are yelling at you. And youre so cold. No hot. Sweating. No cold. Freezing. No burning up again. Tylenol. Advil. But why cant someone make a pill to kill the flu???????? And if youre like me you get dramatic and wonder why God is mad at you. You think maybe this flu virus is actually some kind of sign to get your attention. You feel weak and weepy. And you imagine youll never be your normal self again. Just the pathetic pajama you with the red nose and really bad hair. Then suddenly. You wake up and hear the birds singing. And you feel a little normal. You go hours without your Kleenex box and you developed a taste for coffee again and you wonder if maybe youre going to be okay after all.... You feel grateful. SO GRATEFUL. It really was just a five day flu like the doctor said. And you almost cant believe it. You marvel at how God made your body. How when you rested, your body did its job and fought back and defeated the flu. A mini miracle going on right there inside you. Oh yall. I had the flu. But today I feel better. I can hear the birds singing. And it looks so pretty outside. If youre sick, youll feel better soon too. Just hold on. Drink hot tea. Have some Jello and saltines. Rest a lot. And dont be too hard on yourself. All of life will be waiting there when you get back. And nothing catastrophic will happen if you cant make an appointment or you miss an assignment. Your body is doing a big important job right now. And pretty soon, youll hear the birds singing again. I promise.
