Oh yeah, I never shared my thoughts on The Fault in Our Stars. Ill start by saying Ive never read the book, so whether or not it adapted faithfully or not is irrelevant to me. So please, if you object to something in this mini-review, spare me THAT argument. So its kinda a mixed bag. The bad being the overcooked dialogue and really the entire character Ansel Elgort plays. I could not believe this character would ever exist. He talks like a parody of Diablo Cody scripts, and it was REALLY distracting for the first half. That Anne Frank museum kiss scene gets my vote for the most unintentionally funny scene of the year. Even the though the film is about teens with cancer, it doesnt really focus on its protagonists own affliction in depth. Then the second half rolls around. Thats when he film wins me over. It finally gets me to care when the reality of death is staring them in the face and all of the sudden the emotions are resonant. It stops beating around the bush and hits in the right spots. It pretty much makes up for the underwhelming first half entirely. The one thing I loved throughout the entire thing: Shailene Woodley. I could complain about her seeming lack of actual sickness in her performance, but I blame the film more than her. Shes the emotional core and draw of the film that redeems it even in its most questionable moments. Also great is Laura Dern as her mother. Why she doesnt get more praise is beyond me. Ill give Elgort credit for trying to navigate through his bizarre character, but it sort of beats him down. Hes better in the second half, though.
