Oh yeah, this was the granddaddy of them all, the penultimate - TopicsExpress

Oh yeah, this was the granddaddy of them all, the penultimate horror anthology against which all others were judged and found wanting. Kirby McCauley strikes literary gold with this gruesome collection of some of the finest horror stories ever written. Need an example? The very first story in the whole bunch is nothing less than Stephen Kings The Mist. From there we swing into The Night Shift by Dennis Etchison, later to visit the ancient, filthy city of Bangkok, and the great and wondrous Edward Bryant from right here in Denver contributes with Dark Angel, a dreadful story of revenge and witchcraft that haunts me to this day. T.E.D. Klein, then a powerhouse of a horror novelist, gave us Children Of The Kingdom, about a gaggle of horrific monsters that haunt the sewers of New York City. There were many others, some so powerful they resonate across more than a quarter century to pull at you. I first encountered this wonderful book in my high schools library and have since owned several copies. There is no finer collection of various works out there, before or since. A must for any serious fan of short horror fiction.
