Ohio State Football has arrived. Win or lose, at the close of every game, the sound of chimes quiets the crowd, as the football team assembles in the end zone and everyone joins in singing Carmen Ohio. The words were written by Fred Cornell (reportedly) on the train ride home in 1903 following the 86-0 loss to Michigan. In 1843, sixty years earlier, Christian Bateman wrote the following words and they were published in 1843. The tune is a traditional Spanish melody of unknown origin. It was a well known hymn long before 1903. Not being a grad of OSU, I cannot sing Carmen, Ohio, , but I do sing these words while others are singing the OSU words. Come, Christians, join to sing Alleluia! Amen! Loud praise to Christ our King; Alleluia! Amen! Let all, with heart and voice, Before His throne rejoice; Praise is His gracious choice. Alleluia! Amen! Come, lift your hearts on high, Alleluia! Amen! Let praises fill the sky; Alleluia! Amen! He is our Guide and Friend; To us He’ll condescend; His love shall never end. Alleluia! Amen! Praise yet our Christ again, Alleluia! Amen! Life shall not end the strain; Alleluia! Amen! On heaven’s blissful shore, His goodness we’ll adore, Singing for evermore, Alleluia! Amen!
