Ohoh, Charlotte Faulkner from the Friends of the Dartmoor Hill - TopicsExpress

Ohoh, Charlotte Faulkner from the Friends of the Dartmoor Hill Pony has been on TV to say that the only way to ensure their survival on the Moor- and likewise New Forest and Exmoors- is to use them for meat for human consumption. Charlotte has done more to preserve and conserve the ponies here than anyone, but I can imagine the flak she is going to get for this. Currently the majority of the ponies culled are slaughtered humanely by a slaughterman whom Ive know since childhood and who uses the system developed by the amazing American autistic professor, Temple Grandin, and the meat goes mostly to Longleat safari park and Sparkwell Zoo so what really is the difference? I couldnt bring myself to eat horsemeat but those who are not horse lovers may well not feel the same. Various trials have been carried out with vasectomising stallions, using contraceptives with the mares etc but there is always still a surplus. Stocks have to be at certain levels to maintain the ecology of the Moor. Its a difficult dilemma and one I dont envy Charlotte the fallout that is inevitable.
