Ok. Bear with me for a few minutes. What follows will be a short essay on why I feel that America has lost its edge and will soon (if it hasn’t done so already) no longer be the world’s most envied society. I just spent the weekend working an air show during which the whole overriding theme was that it takes commitment, sacrifice, and hard work to achieve any goal. The particular goal in this case was saving the world from tyranny. The show displayed classic military and transport aircraft, but was not a glorification of war but a statement as to the dedication and courage it takes to truimph. It paid homage to the folks that Tom Brokaw called “The Greatest Generation.” Those folks (probably your parents and grandparents) have been replaced by people who seem mostly to think in terms of I, Me, Mine. I guess you might call me a prime example. I do think that we have become a society that believes it is entitled. Im not only talking about the poor people who don’t pay their water bill but can afford cable, cell, and cigarettes… but also those who are rich and think their shit don’t stink… multi-billion dollar corporations that dodge taxes, and Wall Street thieves. I’m not arguing politics. Though the 24-7 media in this country have turned THAT into the new national pastime, I’m getting tired of it! I’m talking about the folks who come to watch an air show, sing the Star Spangled Banner and America the Beautiful, and beat their chests over how powerful we are militarily, and then when the show’s over leave their garbage behind and rush out to beat the traffic home when the trash bins are ten yards away. They paid their entrance fee, let someone else clean up. I somehow think the show’s message was totally lost on them. Maybe we all need to go back to class on what makes a society really function and what it means to be a good citizen. I applaud my friends who have made efforts in their lives to give back in some way.
