Ok Grant Harrison, off I go on your challenge. 5 favourite records and nominate 3 people per day to do challenge themselves. Record number 1 for me is Standing On The Verge OF Getting It On by Funkadelic. This record was a game changer for me. Whilst I had the One Nation album and a couple of Parliament 12s it wasnt until I lived with Patti Freaks that I could pilfer through his vinyl collection that was in the lounge that I began to explore the P-Funk back catalogue. This album was the bridging album from the original psychedelic rock of early Funkadelic to the full on circus and theatre of P-Funk and this single beautifully joins the two together. Really only has 3 parts to it with the lead guitar playing in unison to lead vocal line in verses, in some ways its quite simple and yet other parts where, particularly through headphones when you hear how the vocals are mixed which still blow my mind. A typical on the button and on the one bass line from the World’s Only Black Leprechaun, Boogie Mosson. This record along with Up For The Down Stroke (more the Horny Horns version rather then Parliament version which for me is a better mix with Bootsy being far clearer in the mix) really made me pay attention to what George was doing and has been so key in influencing my listening of music, playing of music, particularly string sliding on bass - there is no other bass player in history that string slides like Bootsy who doesnt just use it to start of finish a bar, he will play a whole song in this style and in my attitude to performing - to this day Im as happy playing with just a paper mache cock and a LOVE GOD hat as I am a suit. And this song bridges a generation together. It is a favourite of the kinds, especially Roo. Always feels me with pride when the grandparents are in the car and Roo is saying in time to intro in a silly voice Hey lady, wont you be my dog, and Ill be your tree and you can P on me.
