Ok. Heres the rub. Those of us who have been blessed to study and play music for a living have a HUGE responsibility, God has given us a gift that many WISH they had, When you see ian behind a noun,like physician,beautician, technician,mathematician,or MUSICIAN,95% of the time it means one who is skilled in the particular discipline.It also means one who SPECIALIZES in the discipline.In most cases,a SERVICE is provided to the GENERAL PUBLIC. My heart is breaking for the Jazz community. We have lost our way. We no longer give, We take. We are not providing the musical healing service that we once did. Are lives are spent critiquing each other ,and trying to be THE CAT instead of considering the audience. Our weird compositions,that NOBODY can sing, our display of mega chops and the like are KILLING us! The common man WANTS to dig us,but we have not shown them how in the last 30 years. We have been trying to force feed them versus inviting them to the table. Your music is for the PEOPLE! Not you ALONE! Youngsters PLEASE TAKE HEED. If the only people who dig what you do are folks that are JUST like you and from YOUR BACKGROUND,theres a good chance that you have limited your experience and your music needs to expand.Your CONCEPT probably needs expansion. The music CANNOT be little cliques of White suburban 20-30 year olds,or hip hop cats gone jazzy or old Black cats or old White cats, or Latinos or Asians stuck in their own worlds. MY MUSIC works for ALL audiences because its the collective experience of a 51 year old,world traveled,middle class/suburban and HOOD living, church going,university attending, AFRICAN AMERICAN MALE. It contains the BLUES,which is the FOUNDATION for ALL AMERICAN MUSIC. More than likely ,when you hear me,you hear YOU! I implore my fellow Jazz musicians to evaluate your INTENT,MOTIVE,and AGENDA. If the PEOPLE (ALL PEOPLE) are not part of it,YOU HAVE MISSED THE MARK AND ARE WASTING YOUR TIME! SWING ON!!!!!
