Ok I have to say this because I have seen a lot of creativity as an artist... As a whole, artists are weird. Theyre just freakin weird. Im not knocking being weird though. I know Im weird, and Im happy about that because I certainly dont want to be boring and generic, but I also dont stand on rooftops doing shocking things just for attention. I think thats what a lot of artists do. Art has a purpose. Its meant to tell a story. Its intended to convey certain emotions in people and cause the individual experiencing it to think and question and FEEL because many times the story isnt obvious. Its a mystery, and the aim is to make people so captivated and interested that they sit and stare in curiosity, trying to figure it out. But I think what happens is a lot of artists use their status as artist just to get away with bullshit. I can stand like a statue on a street corner naked wearing combat boots and a giant penis hat on my head and call that art. But is that really art? How much creativity does that really take? All its for is shock value. Its for attention. Look at me! Look at me! Im an ARTIST! No youre not. Youre an attention whore. I admit, some art is strange. Ive seen it all. And just because something is strange and a little taboo doesnt mean it isnt art, but we have fools all over the place claiming to be artists that are claiming their art means something when there is no way possible for people to get the message out of it that is supposedly portrays without being heavily explained. It takes little to no physical skill nor creative skill to create it. That isnt art. In addition, the supposed intention of the art ends up being in vain because it causes the opposite affect on the majority of viewers. Believe it or not, being an artist takes skill, not just in a particular artistic craft, but it takes mental skill as well. Not everyone who splashes paint on a canvas or does something interesting is an artist, just like not every Tom, Dick or Harry who has a professional camera and can point and shoot is a photographer. A guy who just makes a bunch of confusing noise on an instrument isnt considered a musician, is he? And a musician who merely learns how to copy a song or two certainly isnt a great musician. Not even a good one. Who are the great musicians out there? Its the Hanz Zimmers, the Steve Vias, the Gavin Harrisons, the Charles Minguss and the Stevie Ray Vaughns who were and are great. Its those who not only had the physical skills but had the creativity to produce and compose original work and present them so convincingly that they can captivate their audience through conveying emotions. I have always excelled beyond the majority of my peers in visual art. Thats raw talent. From very early on I could look at a photograph and duplicate it well with pencils. I got really good at it with consistent practice. That developed my physical skill. But thats not what made me an artist. I didnt step into my full potential until I became skilled in my creativity. I stopped merely duplicating photographs and began to create unique imagery and form my own symbolic photographs in my mind to duplicate. With practice, anyone can learn to be physically skilled in art, even if they dont have the natural raw talent for it, but creativity and the ability to convey your message effectively to your audience is what truly makes an artist. A good artist, at least. No one wants to watch a film or production with a bunch of actors and actresses who have only memorized their lines. That takes skill, but its not enough. Without a convincing act, we simply wont tolerate it. We will either be bored and walk out or the plot will grab us just enough to remain present and leave us with emotional blue balls. So why does the artist community tolerate these imbeciles who do goofy and shocking things as artists? There is a fine line between being an artist and being an entertainer, and I think far too many entertainers think they are artists when theyre not. While faux fruit in bowl may add some aesthetic charm to your table, it has no further purpose other than to be noticed. It is fake, merely imitating something it is not. It is lifeless, flavorless, without sustenance, and at the end of the day, it leaves you hungry for the real thing. The point? Just because you can get noticed, doesnt make you an artist.
