Ok I needed to share what I wrote in response to ignorant people that dont know what teachers really do-------- As an educator I got one thing to say restoration time is needed. Lets see you wake up at 5 to be at school at 6:30 to make sure you have reading materials ready which it doesnt mean you just read a book. You need a skill. Not only a skill but targeting student individual needs. Have different activities for different learners. Which means just about four to six different activities ranging on a variety of levels. Now this is only about two periods a day for this particular subject. Then math, then science, and writing. Not including an overall time to monitor and evaluate students daily. But dont forgot you begin the school day at 8:00 in the morning. By 8:30 kids are still arriving. To begin your reading at 8:45 and end at 9:30 to jump to writing till 10:15 you get a prep time for 45 mins but taking the kids to and from takes about 10 which leaves you with 35 mins to prep for the next period. Then off to science for 45 mins or social studies. Mind you three students decided to push another student. So now the class is wired up and you need to write an accident report. Then your lunch is 50 mins. You take the students to lunch you lose about ten mins. 40 mins to eat, use the restroom, while you checking homework. Then here comes math time. Interactive lessons with differentiated instruction. Then small groups with anecdotal notes to monitor and evaluate individual students. Mind you that means 25-32 students in a class. After, pack up, dismiss and take home a bag full of work to analyze, collect data, and prepare new lessons to target those students who are struggling. We talking about five days a week plus spending my Sundays in pjs watching tv with lessons or tests to be analyzed. Being a teacher is no longer what others think. Sometimes we dont get to use the bathroom. Evidence is essential across the country. Lesson plans are lengthy and effective planning is essential. I chose this career because I enjoy crafting the minds of children and prepare them for the future. That means future professionals that will aide you as you get older. Its upsetting to hear how people really think teaching is having fun all day with all these vacations and holidays. We need that time to reinvent ourselves, if not we get burnt and teachers would not be effective learning leaders.
