Ok, I wonder if anyone has any idea how I might proceed with this one…it’s driving me slightly nuts. 5 weeks ago I used an Eyelead Sensor Gel Stick to clean my Nikon D4. It was the first time I’d used it, and it pulled a chunk of the coating off the IR filter over the sensor, despite using it exactly as instructed. Eyelead supply Nikon with their cleaning kit for their repair shops, so if you send it away to be cleaned, that’s what they use. I took it to Calumet in Bristol (nearest pro shop) and bought a 2nd hand D4 from them (£3k) at the same time so I could do a job the next day. Calumet sent it off for repair. I contacted Eyelead and told them of the problem. There have been a load of emails and phone calls since. The latest one from Eyelead is here : “Hello Sir, We are trying to give you an answer and find the best way to get your camera repaired by Nikon. 1.As you know we never had such bad experience like this that costumers IR Filter got damaged by our Sticks. 2.If this is a production failure of our Sticks, then how can we explain that not the whole coating was damaged but only part of it. That means the Sensor of your camera must had an unhomogeneous coating film. And that would and should be Nikons problem. This is not a damage of the whole IR filter but only the coating on it. 3.And Sir please think about it, we have sold so many Gel Sticks world wide, with out any of this typ of problem. We never heard from costumers using Canon Pentax Sony etc. even Nikon got their coating or filter damaged. 4.We will ask one of our costumer which is a Nikon Service Point in our town wether they ever faced such problem and also about Nikon warranty. And if you want, you can mark your stick and send it to us. We would test it on our cameras and record it to a video. If the coating of our cameras also get damaged, we will take responsebility to the issue. We hope we could give you a reply and please wait for our other mail after I get more information from the Nikon Service Point we know.” Nikon, meanwhile, have refused to do the repair under warranty, (despite the fact that Eyelead say they talked to Nikon in Beijing who said it would be done under warranty), and the bill for repair is apparently £1440. They say the repair is done, but I’m still waiting for the camera to be returned. Calumet think I may be able to pick it up from Bristol on Friday, and I’ll have to pay them the £1440 then. Nikon refuse to talk about the lengthy repair and the need to replace the whole sensor as my repair contract is with Calumet. Calumet seem a little clueless as to what’s going on, but at least the guy there is trying to find out. So - I’m stuck with a repair bill and two companies who are commercially linked both saying it’s the other’s fault (or mine for having the temerity to clean my own sensor). Who am I going to make a claim against, and how?!
