Ok, Im going to be honest here...I miss having pews in churches. I know chairs are far more versatile and allow a room to be used for more than one purpose, but I still prefer a pew. In a pew, one size fits all. That means everyone can be comfortable from the thinnest to the widest. I love the way pews provide privacy...no one sees your posterior. You can sit with confidence. Third, and probably most important is I have memories as both a child and then as a mom of the great way a little child can lay on his/her moms lap while she gently strokes his/her hair, I mean, stretch out with no spaces or bumps or any such thing...and usually no one even knew the child was there because of that privacy aspect I just mentioned. Kids can hide below pews...get down on the floor and use the pew as a place to play or draw or read quietly. Pews felt like home, like a mini couch. Theres room for ones Bible, purse, and notebook. Oh, and if you worked it just right, you could sit on the end pew and have a place to rest your arm. It seemed that there was always room for one more person on a pew whereas most people wont share their chair. And what about pew warming? Are people now forced to warm a chair? It just doesnt sound right. When I hear that a church is giving away pews, I have this immediate inclination to raise my hand even though I dont have a church in which to put them. I guess I could put them in my garage. Who knows, maybe one day I will need them. I could put two together face to face and have sleeping space for company or use them as storage shelves. If I could find a way to waterproof them, theyd make great benches out in the backyard, too. Where have all the pews gone? Long time passing.
