Ok, Im sure Ill get into trouble posting on Facebook but I need some advice. Ive stumbled across a horse who is seriously poorly. By chance I met the owner yesterday who said she was worried about her pony and asked me for my vets number. I went with her to the horse so she could call the vets and found the poor mite just stood with his head down. The owner told me that he has been passing nothing but water for 2 weeks and thinks that maybe they should call the vet. (Ya think)? Its in a field so she comes down every now and then to check but its been in this state for a while. Hes emaciated and so weak he could hardly hold his head up and has stopped eating. They were trying to feed him soggy pellets with pulled grass and dandelion leaves so I went back to our yard and made some warm bran mash which he ate a bit of but it was such an effort. The owner told me the vets werent picking up and making excuses so I rang the vets until they picked up and passed them over. I heard her arrange with the vet to come out straight away so I went home. Worried that she had cancelled the vets as she was very reluctant to call, I rang my vets up to check they had been out which they had. Vet couldnt give me any info and said she legally couldnt tell me to report to RSPCA and couldnt report herself but to follow my gut instinct. So, I called the RSPCA and reported. They rang me this morning and said they wouldnt come out as an emergency today because the vet had been last night and if the vet was that concerned she could have lifted the horse last night? So, theyre calling tomorrow. The horse today can barely stand and wont even touch food at all. It can hardly walk and its back legs are bowing when it does. Its given up :( I want to know if the vets can report it like the RSPCA said but others have told me due to confidentiality, the vets cant? Can the RSPCA seize it there and then tomorrow if they see the star its in? The owner is refusing to make the right decision and insists its a tummy bug. Is there anything more I can do? Im quite certain that it wont last more than a day or so and I cant bare to think of it dying in a field on its own. Im going 4 times a day with feed to tempt it but hes given up on life :( just feel really really helpless!
