Ok.... It is that time of year again. Time to talk about being a pet owner. For those of you that are considering giving a pet to a child as a gift, please reconsider. If you choose to own a pet, you are making a lifetime commitment (their lifetime). They did not choose to come into your home and be neglected or forgotten because the newness has worn away. They still need care--walks, feeding, vet, and grooming. In return, they will give love and companionship. They will always listen without questioning anything. Every year, two weeks after Christmas, the shelters fill up with pure breeds. Thousands of dollars sitting in cages. They certainly dont deserve that. They will never understand why the week before they were running around and playing. Now, they sit hoping that someone will set them free and give them the FOREVER home they need. There are many rescue groups for practically every breed of dog. Cats are also rescued from homes where no one should be forced to fight for survival. They take these abused and neglected pets and give them the best care they can- getting them healthy and ready to be placed in a home. Before YOU make the decision the give this pet as a gift, THINK about everything it takes to welcome the new arrival.
