Ok, Ive been asked about this article a couple times now. Here is a quick (yeah right) breakdown and expansion on it. I agree with his basic assertion, but the article was quite terrible tbh. If you look at the differences in how the top geared lifters bench and the top raw guys, youll see the difference immediately. Here are some vids to check out. Not really doing all top benchers, but know a couple top guys who show what I want and know of a few others. Added my own vid in because even intermediate level benchers know these basics as well. Jona Leo (Bench Shirt) https://youtube/watch?v=_XCiJEyXwtk Shawn Frankl (Bench Shirt) https://youtube/watch?v=UkO3rAUmuuk Me (Bench Shirt) https://facebook/video.php?v=714132112027845&video_source=pages_finch_main_video Eric Spoto & Stan Efferding (Raw) https://youtube/watch?v=bLYhkfadpx4 Mark Bell (Raw) https://youtube/watch?v=efP6y0W-3wU If you watched those vids, youll notice ALL the geared benches were with hands spaced at max legal spacing. Basically the index fingers on the power ring. This shortens ROM (range of motion) and exploits the strengths of the shirt. The strengths of the shirt are specifically designed to overcome the shoulder instabilities created at those angles. The shirt basically bolsters/enhances anatomical deficiencies so that the lifter can engage the attempt in a much more mechanically advantageous position. Raw dudes though, they had their hands spaced INSIDE the power rings. This creates a much more in-line setup from your wrists to your shoulders. This keeps keeps everything in a much more natural position. Many times, the hand spacing in a raw bench would equate to what is called a good football stance position in regards to hand spacing. This is where your body is at its strongest and most able to take on challenges effectively. As you can see, there is a marked difference. TNation has become almost all fluff or marketing articles. And its really sad. This dude had so many options instead of repeating himself multiple times and being very general. I think comparing the best raw dudes as well as the best geared dudes would have gone a long ways to prove his point and he could have used that to launch into, or segway from, the anatomic reasons, etc. Not sure how he came up with the 1.5 x measurement though. Doesnt take into account any other differences, which there are many, between anatomies of trainees/competitors. t-nation/training/bench-press-grip-the-magic-number I really didnt mean to write a book, and know I probably could have delved deeper, but I have to get things done and I think this covers enough to show what I wanted to say.
