Ok, Ive never shared one of my poems on facebook before; I see others doing it, thought Id give it a whirl. Scatter my ashes in the branding pen boys, and turn loose my spirit to roam, These pine-covered ridges and sagebrush hills that cowboys like me call home. Or step on the back of a good riding horse, the long-stepping smooth traveling kind, and toss out my ashes along the trail, wherever your journey may wind. Or pack them on up to the head of the creek, where elk and deer quench their thirst, and lay me out slow on that ripply stream, but pray me some kind verses first. All of these places will do for a bed, when my final days come to their end. I dont need a graveyard, or church bells or such, or any carved stone to attend. In round pens and catch pens and sorting corrals, where a cowboy does much of his toil, Or out on the desert or up in the hills, on the mesa, in the canyons red soil. Thats where my spirit will find final rest, where horses and cattle abide, where the antelope roam near the prairie dogs home, thats where Ill take my last ride. So scatter my ashes in the branding pen boys, I dont want to be underground. Cause there sure aint no sun, nor wind or the rain, and nary a horse can be found. Just step on the back of a good riding horse, a rim-rockin sonofagun, And find me some grama, bluestem and sage, near the trails where the coyotes run. Just scatter my ashes out on the plains, in the valleys and coulees and draws, Where the buffalo grazed and the grizzly bear raged, near the tracks of the timberwolves paws. Yes, scatter my ashes in the branding pen, boys, and turn loose my spirit to roam, Then my soul will find peace, and my journey will cease, When I come to my heavenly home. copyright Duane Lee Nelson, Shortcut Poetry 2014
