Ok, I’m back now but I thought I would share some more pics of my Cretan sojourn. John Peck mentioned Knosos, which I have visited a couple times previously but on this trip I was able to go to Phaistos and the nearby Aya Triada. I think Halbherr’s limited restoration of Phaistos gives a much better sense of the history of the place than Evans’ lurid imaginings of Knososs do of that site. Aya Trida is a little gem, with a wonderful little modern (11th century) church on the site. What the Phaistos photos fail to convey is the setting, on top of a hill overlooking the Messara Plain. A lot of the artifacts found at Phaistos and Aya Triada, including the Phaistos disc, can be seen at the Archaeological Museum in Iraklion.
