Ok, Kerry Warkia, here you go… I have to admit that I was hoping to avoid this Facebook trend altogether, for reasons of vanity and ego. Unlike some of you who look effortlessly fabulous first thing in the morning without makeup or ‘never wear it anyway’ (I’m looking at you Robyn and Sarah!), I actually do wear makeup every day and feel quite self conscious without it. But then, alas, my cousin Kerry posted a lovely pic of herself and impolitely nominated me. To my relief, someone then posted this article - independent.co.uk/voices/comment/the-no-makeup-selfie-craze-is-just-narcissism-masked-as-charity-9202929.html. You see, now I could avoid posting a horrid make-up free selfie, not because of vanity, but because I could claim not to want to be part of this ineffectual, narcissistic fad. But then I began seeing selfies with donation links attached and also realized that almost every pic was accompanied by an account of how cancer had personally affected the person posting it. It seems everyone knows someone who has battled, is battling or has died from some form of the disease. My most personal connection is my father, who passed away from leukemia. The 5th anniversary of his death is coming up at the end of the month. So, I concluded that although this is undoubtedly a fad, it is neither ineffectual nor narcissistic – it’s raising a huge amount of awareness and also probably quite a lot of money. That is why I am – grudgingly – posting my makeup and filter-free selfie along with this link: sunflowerfund.org.za/index.php/2011-10-06-09-50-20/become-a-donor . I have not made a monetary contribution, but I have completed the bone marrow donor application forms. I now nominate Annel Malan, Adele Pretorius, Olivia Gillin de Beer, Julia Brain and Ingrid Wiese to firstly, make some kind of contribution to a reputable cancer charity or organization, and secondly, post a makeup free selfie. (Which, incidentally, is very liberating – now every other pic of me will be lovely by comparison!)
