Ok, Merrill Bluejays! Its HOMECOMING WEEKEND!!! Time for a FLASHBACK MOMENT. Get your royal blue and white on and lets see if you remember. Ready for our song? ------------- Everybody on the bleachers...Rise ..... LOYALTY, OUR SCHOOL SONG: Were loyal to you, Merrill High ... For we know you are out to do or die .... You never will stop, til you reach the tip top... You will go til you drop, Merrill High! U RAH! Carry on as you have in days of yore... Live up to the grads gone before ... You sure are the best of all... In Spring, Summer, Winter, Fall ... Were loyal to you, Merrill Hi-i -igh!!!! (Howd you do??) THE PEP ASSEMBLIES: The football team on the East Gym Floor on chairs in an M, Silver Mers with the team, Otto Bacher or other local Silver M hero giving the pep talk, MHS Band playing school songs, lots of crowd cheers, the coach giving his predictions, crowning of the queen, Buster Bluejay ramping up the crowd, (I was Buster Bluejay for a couple of those pep assemblies! A blast! I had to quit when my mom found out. You are NOT going to be Buster Bluejay, Linda English! Ladies do not do that type of stuff!! Mom and I were clearly not on the same page.) THE FLOATS... Float building in various locations in town, (guarded, making sure other Homeroom groups did not sabotage them), hay wagons, chicken wire, toilet paper, spray paint, big rolls of white paper for the theme... THE PARADE... The floats, (if they held together and if it did not rain), Silver Mers, the Homecoming Royalty, the convertibles, and the Band, livening up the onlookers. OUR FLOAT: Homeroom 100 offered up a dandy, my sophomore year... A coffin (refrigerator box from Gambles), sprayed black, with 2 long black crepe paper-wrapped broom handles through it so 4 of us could carry it. Made in my parents garage. Theme: Well Carry em To Defeat! The carriers were dressed in blue and white. Lets just say, You could tell we were sophomores and it was our first float!!! Needless to say, we did not win the Float Competition. Oh, and, by the way .... It rained, the cardboard box fell apart in front of the Cosmo, and our hands turned black from the wet crepe paper! Yup ... Our first float.... Homeroom 100!!! THE GAME: Friday night, Athletic Park, under the lights, the ground-fogged field. (Sometimes, it was hard to see the players.) But, a Friday night game at Athletic Park, unmatched, that hometown feel, and we all loved it! THE DANCE... After the game, I walked from Athletic Park, along the path between the Prairie River and the church. met that someone special, my football hero after he showered after the game, and we would attend the Homecoming Dance, rockin the night to Jimmy and the Javelins or The Poorboys, dancing The Twist, The Locomotion, The Monkey or a nice slow snuggler! ---------------------- My FLASHBACK MOMENT...Fall and Homecoming... a time I love and cherish... HOMECOMING WEEK ... in our Hometown, Merrill. (Linda English Kautza)
