Ok TBH I know that racism and prejudice exists everywhere, and that as individuals in a minority group we are always encouraged to deal with it in a classy manner. ie Rise above it, dont let it bother you. But arent yall tired of it all? I sure am. After decades of propping up the New Zealand growth story by being the back of labour that that country has relied on, its people still consider us thieves, delinquents and second-class citizens. Im tired of it. Im tired of all of it, of having to be the bigger person in these situations. Tired of our people being exploited for sport and entertainment. Tired of our people being beat up on by the media as some sort of societal leech that apparently drains the decency of New Zealand society. Im tired of our people giving so much to New Zealand yet our contribution continues to be trivialised. As a people Maori and Polynesians need to be more assertive of our rights to be there. Our rights to be part of the decision-making bodies of the country. We have a right to exist as equals in New Zealand society without having to endure hidden institutionalised racism that rears its ugly head in the actions of some of its people. Granted this does not apply to all New Zealanders, but the silence of so many in this matter is just deafening. No point in claiming equality if youre not willing to implement it from birth, not after the fact. Its not good enough to get half-hearted apologies after incidents take place. After our people have been humiliated once again. Educate your people first. Then maybe we wont be treated like castaways by some in the general population..
