Ok. The moment has come. Received a bunch of vinyl from Neil Sheasby, brought with Dots Xmas cheque. Im determined to love these because... well, I love Dot. Breaking the seal on the 1st: The Legacy/Music On Vinyl addition of Miles Daviss Kind of Blue. This one is a tester; sure to bring out my OCD quirks. I was a little unsure of the edition as I was expecting the recent 2014 remaster (on blue vinyl); this one is a 2010 pressing; sweetened by an extra disc that has an extra track On Green Dolphin Street and and alt take of Flamenco Sketches. Here goes... Cricky; the detail is stunning but its as warm as can be; treacly... I thought there was distortion but its spit! The bottom end. The lead lines are so familiar; its the subtle dynamics of Chambers and Cobb (bass and drums) thats the real revelation. Oh, and Bill Evans prodding piano. Its seat of the pants playing and listening; always engaging, now just beyond brilliant. Evans perceptive sleeve notes detail the accent/insistence on improvisation: There is a Japanese visual art in which the artist is forced to be spontaneous. He must paint on a thin stretched parchment with a special brush and black water paint in such a way that an unnatural or interrupted stroke will destroy the line or break through the parchment. Erasures or changes are impossible. These artists must practice a particular discipline, that of allowing the idea to express itself in communication with their hands in such a direct way that deliberation cannot interfere. The resulting pictures lack the complex composition and textures of ordinary painting, but it is said that those who see well find something captured that escapes explanation. This conviction that direct deed is the most meaningful reflections, I believe, has prompted the evolution of the extremely severe and unique disciplines of the jazz or improvising musician. Heres some rare footage of the band playing. You dont like Jazz? Two words: So What https://youtube/watch?v=zqNTltOGh5c
