Ok. Twice in as many days, Ive heard the word ONUS used by friends in conversation. Ive never heard this word used in regular ol conversation, except by somebody at a Scrabble board asking Whats an onus? This kind of thing happens from time to time; news media use some relatively obscure word over and over in place of its more commonly used equivalent, (vintage words for the sake of hipness? maybe focus groups liked the sounds of certain words?) naturally giving the viewer/listener context by which to glean its meaning, and voila - some sad, neglected word gets to come out and play again! This, as I see it, is one of mainstream and many other news medias few socially redeeming functions. And yes, I know what ONUS means!
