Ok all, this is the response I got from our Environmental Minister Greg Hunt. Im sure its the same that everyone else got who messaged him..love to hear what you have to say about this. I mean really.. is it supposed to make a difference that dumping will be 40 kms away!?..dont oceans and tides travel??...phffffftttttttt... is this supposed to make us feel better??? Thank you for your message. The Great Barrier Reef is an important natural asset which the Government is committed to protecting. The port is not the largest coal port terminal in the world. It is not even the largest in Australia. Both sites are existing ports. The decision aligns with the UNESCO World Heritage Committee’s recommendations not develop areas outside the existing and long-established major port areas along the coast. In regards to claims about the disposal of dredge material there is no dumping of spoil on the Reef. The nearest disposal site is 40km from the nearest Reef. The entire process was 100 per cent transparent and has been ongoing for several years. The Coalition Government has already committed $40 million to a Reef Trust for long term sustainability of the Reef. Economic development and protection of the Great Barrier Reef are not mutually exclusive. Maintaining both can be achieved with careful management. Cheers, Greg Chat conversation end
