Ok, band friends. I just watched the Tarpon Springs BOA championship show... Obviously, the band is very good. I will in no way take anything away from the talent of all the students involved. BUT... I hate that THATs what it takes to win a marching band contest these days. I felt like i was watching a cirque du doleil show, and I love cirque du soleil. Uniforms and drums lighting up with LEDs, all the crazy giant props, a giant people-swinging-contraption, the constant narration. Ive written and been a part of plenty of shows with narration and props, but it just seems like such overkill. For example, two shows that involve similar concepts that were pretty clear, without extensive props or any narration Cavaliers - Machine Cadets - Toy Souldier Im not saying that they have to be on that level at BOA, but you CAN design an effective show without all the stuff This band was awesome. They sounded great and the music was fantastic. The guard was incredible. Id just love to see someone step up and design a show and be the best band in the country without thousands and thousands of dollars worth of just STUFF added in.
