Ok complained to M&S about their use of workfare and have now got a response. not sure what to make of it: Dear Lily Thanks for taking the time to contact us about our work experience programme. I can understand your concern regarding this scheme and I appreciate you allowing us the opportunity to provide you with some more information. Workfare is a government led initiative designed to get people into the workplace. Through this scheme, individuals receiving certain benefits are required to attend a work experience programme to continue receiving their benefits. Marks and Spencer is not affiliated with any government scheme and does not use Workfare in any area of the business. ‘Make Your Mark’ is an M&S-led initiative run in partnership with the Prince’s Trust to support those that face barriers to the workplace. It is entirely voluntary and participants gain placements via various charities. Through the four week work placement we aim to help young people get valuable, confidence-building job experience and support. Our experience is that more than half will go on to find employment. For more information on this scheme, please take a look at our press release.
