Ok, for everyone that does not know the back story, obviously no point in holding back now: Patty Paris and Mike Woods were married and living next door to us (to the north) when we moved in. They had one child who was over at our property so often that all of my friends called him our 5th kid- we included him on our zoo membership and Childrens Museum membership and always took him out with us. Mike Woods not only helped install the barn that we later converted to a kennel in 2005 (5 years before we moved here) but also was the contractor we hired for the installation of the septic system. IN BOTH the building of the barn and the septic system, he FAILED to get the correct permits. Fast forward a few years... they are split up (not yet divorced) and Patty wants her then boyfriend to come and stay in our in-law suite that sat above the nursery. I did not feel comfortable with that and just politely said I did not think it would work. Since we had moved in here, Patty had a pump ILLEGALLY in our pond. For years I said nothing about this- we were neighbors and I wanted to remain on amicable terms. Well, one day, during a very bad drought, Patty decides she will upgrade that pump to a commercial grade pump so that she can fill a pond that she just built on her property. I, as politely as possible, told her that the pond was dangerously low and it was where we got all of the water for the property- kids, dogs, house, etc. and that since she was only filling her pond that she needed to wait. She went ahead and continued to demolish trees on our property and installed her pump anyway. I then let her know that the pump she was putting in was on MY property and that she needed to stop. Not too long after, we left for ADRK KLUBSIEGER in Germany. While we were gone, of course for those of you who follow us here, you know she went ahead and brought in a backhoe, extended the pond on her property, dropped her pump in there and significantly lowered our pond running our pump dry and completely ruining our entire water system (THOUSANDS of dollars of damage! not to mention no water for the entire property until we got it fixed!!) AGAIN, in an effort to be a good neighbor, I never said a single negative word to her. Never asked for a penny and fixed everything myself. For anyone who has not met her, she is an exceptionally condescending, catty woman. Even when we were on amicable terms, she constantly talked down to me as though I were 4 years old. I think she mistook my kindness and tolerance for ignorance. When Tahlia was in the hospital 2 years ago following her horrific accident, I came home briefly between surgeries. Patty caught me outside when I was headed up to take care of my dogs and flagged me down. I naively thought she wanted to inquire about Tahlia. No. She let me know that while we had been in the hospital, she had taken it upon herself to plant some trees and grasses on her property down by my kennel. I told her that was ok and that it looked nice. She then told me that she was spending about $5,000 on it and that she knew I had a lot on my plate right now but that eventually she wanted to get a payment plan in place for me. Here my daughter was fighting for her leg, I had not slept in days and she wanted me to pay for trees SHE PLANTED on HER property??? I walked away because it was the only polite response I could muster! Even though I have never wrong a single one of my neighbors and tolerated their horse on my property, their dogs on my property, their kids on my property... And for those that do not know all the politics involved- one of our neighbors who was against us is running for commissioner and he is the ONLY one running, so of course assured of the position. The commissioner appoints the board of zoning. We were screwed before we even walked in there. This whole mess was a complete farse. There is so much more to this- I could type all day- about the neighbor who told my then 6 year old son that he should put a bullet in the puppies head because the only good Rottweiler was a dead one; the neighbor who asked my then 10 year old daughter how many f***ing dogs did we have We were the ONLY party that presented facts. We had experts, we did decibel and sound impact studies, we did appraisal and environmental impact studies, surveys, etc. Their entire case was biased thoughts and opinions of neighbors. Per Johnson County regulations ...personal preferences, or the disapproval of one’s neighbors likewise cannot, as a rule, qualify as an exceptional hardship. But there was not any attempt at all made to learn the actual facts. The decision was made before we even walked in. And for all of my haters and neighbors reading this now. It aint over til the fat lady sings- and I am NOT a singer!! You might have all been celebrating your victory over the small battle last night as my children -the same children that your kids go to school with- sat sobbing (btw, hope you are all proud of yourselves!) but you have NOT won the war! And if you think the dogs smelled, wait until you have a hog farm in your little neighborhood and I have also been given feedback that peacocks are even louder and more annoying than roosters? perhaps I need both... I AM NOT GOING ANYWHERE!!! So keep sipping your wine and giving each other high-fives. I have peacefully kept to myself the whole time I have been here, so perhaps, much as ms patty did, you mistake my previous diplomacy for indifference or acceptance. NOT ONCE in FOUR YEARS did a SINGLE ONE OF YOU have the huevos to come and say a SINGLE word to me. NOT ONCE in FOUR YEARS was there a SINGLE COMPLAINT against me or my dogs with any of the police or sheriff departments, animal control officers or even with the department of planning and zoning. Instead you choose to crawl out of the walls like cockroaches. No worries. Now that I do not have to play nice, it is about to get fun.
