Ok guys - Heres one for yall - Lost the key to my car - yes -- it is one of those chip keys, so I knew it would be expensive. I googled and found a locksmith S. A. Locksmith (in San Antonio) that would come to my house. Called and recd quote of $19.95 service charge and $99.00 for the key. I was told it might cost a little bit more depending on if it was more difficult to program . The locksmith shows up in a non-descript van with no markings on it whatsoever - this should have been my first clue that disaster was heading my direction. Even before the locksmith touched my car he handed me an invoice for $433. YIKES!!! I immediately told him no way, he tried to tell me that a key for $150 was a bargain and that another $150 for labor was reasonable -- I called the company and explained that the locksmith was trying to rip me off. The dispatcher and the locksmith spoke and then I was told they would reduce the price to $250. Initially, I said ok -- because I had to get the key. Came back inside and then called Red McCombs Ford and was told the cost of the key is $45. Immediately found another locksmith and was quoted $144 plus tax would cover everything. I called S.A. Locksmith and told them to tell their locksmith to STOP immediately. It took me about 8 minutes to get back outside and the locksmith was still sitting in his vehicle and he gets out of the van and says, they told me you wanted me to stop working and I said yes. Then he tried to bully me into letting him go on with his work. He even threatened to call the police. I told him to go right ahead and call the police and we would see what the police would have to say. I told him I was calling the BBB, the Attorney General and that I had a call into Kens 5 television. He called his supervisor and the locksmith told his supervisor that I was giving him problems. (he hasnt seen a problem.) I asked to speak with his supervisor and I explained to the supervisor (Samuel) that I felt that his locksmith was trying to rip me off and I was NOT going to be taken advantage of, especially, when the quote I was given was so much lower than what he was trying to charge me at his reduced price. Additionally, I told him I had spoken with Red McCombs and learned what the price of a key was and his locksmith was trying to charge me more than 3 x the price of the key. He told me he would tell his locksmith to stop work, keep the key and leave or that he would tell his locksmith to give me the key that was cut and charge me $100 (more than 2 x the real cost of the key) and leave.... I told him to tell his locksmith to give me a copy of the proposed invoice for the $250 (I already had a copy of the first invoice) and to leave immediately. It took the locksmith approximately 15 more minutes to write on the second invoice (in completely grammatically incorrect English and misspellings). I added my note to the invoice and he finally left. The honest locksmith, Amerikeys, arrived and in less than 20 minutes had cut the key, programmed it and was finished. Charged me the price quoted and even apologized for the difficulties I had had previously. Conclusion - be careful and dont loose your chip keys and if you live in the San Antonio area and you need a locksmith DO NOT CALL S.A. LOCKSMITH!!! Call AMERIKEYS (210) 967-5397!!!!
